What we collect
Everyone who visits the site — anonymous usage statistics only: the pages you view, how long you spend on them, clicks, downloads, the site you came from, your browser and device type, language and time zone. We store a random visitor ID in your browser to count visits. We do not store your IP address, and these statistics are not linked to your name or email address.
If you create an account — your name, email address and a salted hash of your password (never the password itself), plus a record of what you consented to, when, and under which version of this notice.
If you opt in to named activity tracking — your name against what you do on the Books page: when you view it, how long you read online, and how long you listen with read-aloud, including how you use the read-aloud controls.
Why we use it
- To create and run your account.
- To understand, in aggregate, how the site is used so we can improve it.
- Only if you opt in: to see how individual readers use the books, so we can improve them.
Consent
Creating an account requires your consent to this notice. Named activity tracking is a separate choice, switched off unless you tick it, and it is not a condition of having an account. You can change it at any time above (once signed in). Withdrawing stops any further named recording; it does not affect records made earlier unless you ask us to remove them.
Who can see it and where it is kept
Only authorised Data Info South Africa administrators can view usage reports and the account details you gave at registration (name, email address, when you registered and what you consented to), and can activate or deactivate accounts. A deactivated account cannot sign in. Information is stored with Microsoft Azure storage services. We do not sell personal information.
How long we keep it
Account details are kept until you delete your account. Usage statistics are kept only for as long as needed for the purposes above.
Your rights
You may ask us to confirm what personal information we hold about you, to correct it, or to delete it (including named Books activity records), and you may object to its processing. You can delete your account yourself above. For any other request, contact Data Info South Africa using the contact details on datainfo.co.za.
If you are unhappy with how we handle your information you may complain to the Information Regulator (South Africa) at inforegulator.org.za.
